NAME: Averra Ren
GENDER: Female
AGE: Young adult
SPECIES: Corsac Fox (Vulpes corsac)
RANK: Averra was once a pupil at the College of Valliss, but she left and is now a freelancing scientist that studies bird species and wing anatomy in hopes of revolutionizing the wing design for foxes. She is also captain of the Hawk, an airskiff.
EYE COLOR: Pale brown, with alternating hazel and mocha rings.
FUR COLOR: Light gray, with darker, dappled streaks on forelegs.
ELEMENTS: Light Air, she is skilled at conversing with birds and only uses levitating to give her a boost while flying, as she does with wind. She's adept at manipulating the wind and air, though not without effort.
DESCRIPTION: Averra is a rather undersized and flighty looking corsac fox, unlike others of her kind. Her size has been the basis for a bit of teasing. The teasers didn't get away unscarred. She's prone to hunching over a bit, something she picked up from the birds she travels with. As a result, she had her spine lined with the most flexible metal available; it allows her relatively free movement, while keeping her back straight.
Her eyes are a pale brown, with alternating rings of mocha and hazel. They're pretty soft, although if she's glaring at you the delicious coffee smoothie will turn to solid mocha colored granite. Her fur is a light, smooth gray, with darker feather like streaks on her forelegs. She likes to think it makes it look like she's wearing feathers, though it's hardly necessary, as she has removable wings to use.
Her wings are just like those of a peregrine falcon in shape. Slender and pointed in general shape, in size they're rather bulky and not the best for manuvering. Their color is like her eyes; mocha, with indistinct hazel bars. Her feathers are kept in perfect condition. Averra is fastidious about keeping her wings and fur neat and in good shape. They are essentially feathers securely attached to a mechanical frame, controlled by a, wait for it, handheld(or pawheld ?XD) controller.
As her fur is rather short, it's not good for fluffing up, so she can't appear larger. She keeps it neatly groomed; might as well look decent. Averra's tail is decidedly un-bushy and tapered. It flattens out and widens slightly in the middle, which helps her steer when flying. It's a shade darker than the rest of her, as are her paws which are a bit fluffy. She finds this is good for polishing stuff. The fur hides small hooked claws, which she has little reason to use. However, she sharpens them regularly.
Along with all the aforementioned features, Averra often wears a silver mask that matches a collar she has. It is engraved with feather patterns dancing around the metal. The mask fits snugly around her head and has hinges just below the ears. The edges latch together at her collar.
PERSONALITY: Averra isn't the outgoing type when she isn't with her friends. Although she'll be really nice if you talk to her first, she isn't going to walk up and say hi. If someone tries to mess with her, she'll instinctively retaliate in a hostile manner, but Averra tries to avoid doing this as she is rather self conscious about the way others see her. With friends, she's the funny and smart one, slightly sarcastic but really loyal. If entrusted with a secret, it's gonna share her grave.
When angered, she's prone to screaming shrilly if you really get on her skinny nerves, Averra would much rather confront annoying people verbally(ex, grab a napkin; you just got served )Lots of things are out of the question for her because of her self consciousness. For example, she'd love to learn martial arts but can't stand the thought of shouting a weird syllable whenever she moves.
As for work, she's dedicated to her current job, which is studying bird species and wing anatomy. It's her first thought when she wakes and the last before she sleeps, so if there's an project important to her, she'll eat, sleep, and breathe it. Although Averra's not afraid to procrastinate a lot, she'll get the job done no matter what.
She'd prefer to be the honest and kind fox, but growing up in the House Morgann left her street smart and wily. As she's a traveler, these skills are often needed in tight spots. Averra knows that wheedling won't work when your ship is in the shadow of an large and very aggressive feline frigate. She'll play the part of anyone, from the insolent, spitting pirate type, to obnoxious and oblivious moron. Stage fright doesn't seem to apply in the middle of nowhere, without anyone you actually know watching.
Averra is very well-read, but she's not the nerd type. She keeps her troves of random information squirreled away, only dusting it off when the situation calls for it. Birds are her specialty. She might spout random facts whenever she sees one, which to others is the very definition of nerd. She spent all her spare time studying everything avian related, which turned out to be very useful during her travels among the winged.
Due to unenviable people skills, Averra took up the subject of hostage negotiation. This, in her mind, would at least let her have a decent conversation without insulting someone. As with her other abilities, being a hostage negotiator has helped immensely in her travels, especially when a hostile band of marauders decides they want fox for lunch. Her semi-decent ability to use her claws didn't hurt either.
HISTORY:Averra was born into the House Morgann, and fit the mold perfectly in her youth. She knew, for instance, when to turn and walk in the other direction at the sight of a certain fox. Tight situations with some of the shadier gangs left her with a quick tongue and some average knife skills. Lying wasn't her favorite pastime, but she was decent at it. Av wasn't a bully, but the others knew not to mess with the skinny gray corsac.
Being an only child, friend making wasn't Averra's forte. She tended to be more of a loner, staying on the sidelines, but watching and taking in every bit of detail. This didn't stop her from being sarcastic and a little insolent in her youth. Luckily she was a fast runner.
Her parents were the average middle class-get-good-grades-or-else family, and she quickly earned a scholarship due to intensive studies in biology. She patented her mechanical wings which left her fairly well off despite their clunky use. After completing her years at the College of Valliss, Averra changed her last name to Ren(after her best bird friend, also because she rebelled against her parent's strict regime) and with the money from her inventions, bought an airskiff and left to travel.
Setting up a small base on a giant lump of rock that strayed from the Barbed Mountains, after carving out a simple home and lab, along with a station for modifying her airskiff, Averra settled down. It was here that she dug deeper into her mechanical wing design, tweaking the signal from her controller and changing materials here and there to make them more aerodynamic. Along the way, her spine was straightened with the flexible metal.
Averra only spent a year on the mountain. After adding a few final touches to her airskiff and wings, she gathered up her scanty equipment and flew to a forest some leagues off of Oasis Serenitus. There she began her more extensive studies to bird species and wing anatomy, gathering a small crew of a fox and birds. These are her friends and companions, who travel and do sciency research in the forests of Anathema.
I won't develop her pals into full charries; just use them when talking with Av.
EQUIPMENT: Due to her unenviable size, which can be a hindrance when traveling in hostile land, Averra developed plain claw extensions of light and sturdy metal, held in place with a slim brace. Her wings are held in place with a bulky harness consisting of straps and latches and the like. The pro is that Averra's flown long enough to slip in and out of them quickly. Her size helps. The cons are the weight and size. However, given Averra's moderate Light Air magic, liftoff is a little easier.
Averra keeps her equipment on her airskiff the Hawk, of which she is captain. It's moderately sized, with room for herself and five others, along with storage space. She also has a small lab where she nitpicks at her wings. Her ship is built to be aerodynamic, with the latest wing design that she's found to be faster than the other, older designs. It's based off of her own research in wings, of which Averra is immensely proud.
In terms of weapons, Averra keeps a decent array of guns and blades(mainly acquired from feline ships or wolven tanks in battle) in a locker on board the Hawk. These include several pistols and swords. Her close combat weapon of choice is a modified wasp knife, 'liberated' from a pirate. It's a medium size blade, with a simple handle. The center of the blade is marked by a slender, clear tube that extends into the handle and point. Averra uses Light Air magic to compress air into the tube. On impact, the air will shoot into the wound, most likely dislocating several organs if stabbed near the central body.
Her silver collar is slender and engraved with a swirling feather design. Attached to the silver like a collar tag is a controller with a tiny cord for reeling in her wing unit controller. When she extends the cord by tapping the collar, she can control her wings with a small touch screen. Her claw extensions work with this, tapping and swiping to send commands to her wings.
Averra's mask goes along with her collar. Besides latching onto it in order to stay closed, the silver has a built in mike and transmitter that can control her wings. This also allows her to communicate with others as long as she is in range of a communications console or something like it. The silver is reinforced inside and so protects her head and neck. She received the mask and collar from a freelancing smith near the Barbed Mountains. As a token of her gratitude towards the smith, Averra often visits him with more materials for his work. She's now dreaming up designs for full body armor.
RELATIONSHIPS: Averra's relationship with her crew is pretty nice. She is their captain and friend and they would obey her without question. But they aren't servants or mindless drones. Her crew isn't afraid of voicing their opinions and being casual. Averra was never one for strict military type business, since her parents raised her strictly as if she was a soldier.
The crew of the Hawk:
Fantine Kensington: Female gray fox, she's a decent mechanic and is the quartermaster of the Hawk. Has a lighthearted nature and is a novice Light Air sorceress. Averra's been teaching her and she can communicate with birds well enough but sucks at manipulating air.
Deity: Peregrine falcon, male. He is close friends with Averra and is her second when it comes to controlling the Hawk. Av bases many of her wing designs off of his, which flatters the bird to no end.
Swift: Quick female hummingbird of unknown descent. She is always cheerful and is as snarky as a tiny bird can get. She's the pro at repairing the ship and sometimes advises Av.
